React Native is loved for its promise of building mobile apps using a single JavaScript codebase. But as any experienced developer knows, there is always a point where JavaScript alone is not enough—especially when your app needs deep access to native device features.

This is where Native Modules step in.

Whether it is Bluetooth, camera, sensors, or third-party SDKs that do not expose a JavaScript interface, Native Modules allow you to write platform-specific code and expose it to your React Native app. And while the concept has existed for years, evolving architecture and performance demands have made mastering Native Modules a critical skill for React Native developers.

What Are Native Modules in React Native?

Every React Native app—knowingly or unknowingly—is using Native Modules.” From accessing the camera to triggering a haptic feedback or handling Bluetooth connections, these modules let you bypass React Native's abstraction and access the real power under the hood.

Think of them as escape hatches when React Native’s standard APIs fall short. Instead of waiting for the ecosystem to catch up, Native Modules let you build integrations that talk to native device code in your language of choice.

The concept is simple: Native Modules live in your Android and iOS folders and are exposed to the JavaScript runtime via a bridge

But here’s the kicker—not all bridges are created equal.

  • Performance-sensitive tasks: Real-time media processing or handling Bluetooth scans.

If you are integrating an SDK and you don’t find an existing RN wrapper, it’s probably time to write your own Native Module.

Building Your Native Module: A High-Level Overview

Here is a condensed overview of the steps Manish went through:

  1. Setup your native folder structure and dependencies.
  2. Create the binding layer using @ReactMethod (Android) or RCT_EXPORT_METHOD (iOS).
  3. Write your native logic in the respective platform codebase.
  4. Export the module so it can be invoked from JavaScript.

‘Keep your module clean and modular. Don't couple it too tightly with your app logic. This ensures better testability and long-term maintainability.”

Using TypeScript specs for your module can significantly improve type safety and developer experience—especially when combined with modern codegen tools.

Challenges and Misconceptions Around Native Modules

Despite their power, Native Modules are often misunderstood or misused. Here are some of the most common pitfalls:

  • “React Native is all JavaScript.” That’s a myth. Every RN app leverages native capabilities—it’s just hidden behind the abstraction.

  • Debugging headaches when bridging JS with native code. Logs and structured error handling can help.

  • Poor threading decisions—some developers block the main thread unintentionally, which leads to jank and ANRs.

Here’s a piece of advice: 'Understand what runs where—JS thread, UI thread, or Native Modules thread. That alone solves half the bugs.

The Future: TurboModules and the Shift in Architecture

The React Native ecosystem is steadily transitioning toward TurboModules, a more efficient and type-safe alternative to traditional Native Modules. Built on top of the JavaScript Interface (JSI), TurboModules eliminate the need for serialized bridge communication, enabling direct function calls and significantly improving memory and runtime performance. 

One of their standout features is the ability to lazy-load modules, which ensures that native code is loaded only when needed, leading to faster startup times and reduced memory footprint. According to Manish, this architectural shift is not just theoretical; it's becoming increasingly standard in newer React Native versions like v0.71 and beyond, making it a crucial investment for teams building future-ready, production-grade applications.
