Today, I want to talk about something I find fascinating—what makes an app truly feel native. There isn’t a single definitive answer to this because it’s a combination of many small things: animations, gesture handling, transitions, and the overall design.

For instance, when a screen comes in from the right and exits in the same direction, it feels intuitive. A modal sliding up from the bottom, with the background slightly shrinking and dimming, adds a sense of depth. These seemingly minor details come together to make the experience seamless.

On mobile devices, these transitions feel natural, unlike websites where routing often pops in abruptly without direction. The goal is to make every interaction smooth and intuitive, making users feel connected to the app.

What Makes an App Truly Native?

The native feel isn’t just about functionality—it’s about perception and interaction. Small gestures, thoughtful animations, and responsive designs all play a part.

I love showing examples to make this clear. Take a gallery app: on mobile, you can drag and move images naturally, mimicking real-world behavior. On the web, however, the interaction is static—you click, and the image opens. It’s functional but lacks the immersive touch that mobile apps deliver.

These little things—how a modal behaves, and how an animation flows—are what elevate an app from merely functional to truly native.

Using React Native and Expo to Achieve the Native Feel

When it comes to implementing these native touches, React Native and Expo offer incredible tools. For example, using react-navigation and react-native-reanimated, you can create directional transitions that feel smooth and natural.

I love how easy it is to implement a routing system where screens enter from one direction and exit in the same way. Apps like WhatsApp do this exceptionally well. When you open a chat, it slides in from the right, and when you go back, it exits to the left. It doesn’t just disappear—it moves as expected, making the interaction feel connected.

Modals are another great example. In React Native, modals can push the background backward, add a slight overlay, and shrink the visible content. It creates a layered effect, like stacking cards, and gives a polished, native feel with minimal code.

Shared Element Transitions and Advanced Animations

One of my favorite features in React Native is shared element transitions. These transitions allow elements to morph between screens, creating a cohesive flow. With the latest version of react-native-reanimated, implementing these transitions has become even simpler.

You don’t need a complex configuration or extensive code to create stunning effects. It’s amazing how much you can achieve with just a few lines of code. These tools give developers the freedom to focus on creativity while keeping the process streamlined.

Good Practices for Building Native-Like Apps

There are a few things I always keep in mind while developing native apps:

Auto-Filling OTPs: Native apps can fetch OTPs directly from SMS, saving users the hassle of entering them manually.
Form Elements and Keyboards: When a keyboard appears, the UI should adjust dynamically, ensuring form fields remain visible and accessible.
Status Bar Customization: Depending on the app, I decide whether to hide the status bar, extend animations into it, or customize its color to match the theme.
Safe Area Usage: Safe areas are essential for making an app visually appealing. For example, animations and gradients should extend into these areas, but important content should stay clear of notches or bottom navigation bars.

Handling Routing Challenges and Gestures

Routing can be tricky in React Native, but it’s manageable with the right approach. For instance, switching between bottom tabs shouldn’t clutter the back navigation stack. In apps like Swiggy, you can move between tabs without the back button cycling through every previous tab.

Gestures also play a huge role in creating a native experience. Swiping back or forward, rather than tapping buttons, feels more natural on mobile devices. I make sure to incorporate these interactions for a smoother user experience.

Closing Thoughts

Creating a native app isn’t just about functionality—it’s about crafting an experience that feels intuitive and delightful. React Native and Expo provide the tools to make this process simpler while allowing developers to focus on the finer details that make an app stand out.

Whether it’s implementing directional transitions, using shared element animations, or customizing models, every little detail matters. These are the things I focus on to ensure the apps I build aren’t just functional but also memorable.
